Bangkok BTS & MRT Fares and Monthly Commuting Costs

This table summarises ordinary adult single-journey fares for BTS, MRT and the Red Line from operator publications. What you pay depends on your stations, card and discount eligibility. The ฿20 flat fare was cancelled by cabinet resolution on 23 June 2026; separate measures have their own conditions, listed below.

Selected fare discounts

  • Thai Help Thai Plus — the state pays 60%, the passenger 40% · Ends
    For eligible participants, pay through the เป๋าตัง app at a ticket office from 06:00–23:00 for adult or senior single-journey tickets on the MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink lines. State support is capped at ฿200 per day and ฿1,000 per month.
  • ฿40 all-day cap — Red and Purple lines only · Ends
    No registration. Unlimited trips within one day at ฿40 for adults and ฿30 for students, using an EMV contactless card. You are charged the real fare and the excess is refunded to the card within about three working days.

What happened to the ฿20 flat fare

The cabinet revoked its own resolution of 8 July 2025 which had created the measure, so the ฿20 scheme was cancelled outright rather than lapsing pending renewal. The table above shows each line's base fares; eligible passengers may use separate support measures subject to each measure's conditions and end date.

The announced common-ticket plan

Check your actual route before choosing a condo

This table summarises ordinary fares by line. It is not a station-pair quote or a route calculator. Living near a station does not always mean the same commuting cost: start with the station near home and the destination you use regularly.

  1. Identify your origin and destination
    Check whether the trip stays on one line or requires a change, then check the station-pair fare with the operator linked in the table. Do not treat a line's maximum fare as the price of every trip.
  2. Count the whole journey
    When changing operators, check boarding charges and transfer discounts. Include feeder travel from the condo to the station and from the station to work.
  3. Use the days you actually travel
    If you work from home some days, reduce the monthly travel days. Trip passes, student cards and temporary discounts have different conditions: compare only benefits you can actually use.

Lower rent can still mean a higher monthly total

Compare monthly rent + (outbound and return fares per day × travel days) + monthly feeder travel. If both directions cost the same, use the single fare × 2.

Condo B saves ฿500 in rent but adds ฿880 in travel, making its monthly total ฿380 higher than A. Compare travel time, actual walking distance and the walking route alongside the budget.

Is the ฿20 flat fare still running?

No. On 23 June 2026 the cabinet revoked its own earlier resolution creating the measure. It was cancelled outright rather than lapsing pending renewal, so registration through the ทางรัฐ app no longer confers anything. The ordinary fares are the base rates; separate card benefits or discount measures can reduce what you pay.

What discounts exist right now?

This page lists 2: Thai Help Thai Plus — the state pays 60%, the passenger 40% (until 30 September 2026); and ฿40 all-day cap — Red and Purple lines only (until 30 November 2026). Each has conditions and an end date. Check with the operator for other passes or benefits beyond this list.

When does the ฿17–45 common ticket start?

Not yet. Common fare — boarding charge up to ฿17, capped at ฿45 per journey is targeted for 1 January 2027. It is a plan for participating lines, subject to legislation, systems and operator readiness. It is not a fare you can use today.

Why does each line charge differently?

Each line has its own operator and concession, with fares set by regulations published in the Royal Gazette or by operator announcement. Fares generally rise with the number of stations, with a boarding charge and a per-trip cap, and changing between operators means paying a second boarding charge — the problem the common ticket is meant to solve.

Is the Green Line maximum ฿47 or ฿65?

Both, for different journeys. ฿47 caps travel within the 26-station concession route; ฿65 caps a journey that crosses between the concession route and an extension; check the station pair for the actual fare.

Are there senior and student fares?

Yes. Thai nationals aged 60 and over travel at half price by regulation — for example ฿23 maximum on the Pink and Yellow lines, ฿9 on the Gold Line, ฿21 on the Red Line, where students pay ฿38. Each requires that specific card type.
